Sprint CEO has interesting comments about the iPhone

Sprint, in case you don’t know, is the exclusive carrier of Palm Pre in US. In a recent interview, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse was asked about the iPhone. Hesse thinks that it is not a fair comparison. He said the iPhone is like “Michael Jordan” of smartphone, the question is like comparison someone with Michael. Hesse seems praise the iPhone, isn’t it?

Accidentally leaked: Palm webOS 1.2 comes with great enhancements

When will Palm Pre beats the iPhone successfully? I don’t know, but Palm Pre webOS is improving. A vendor accidentally leaked webOS 1.2 to some users. The new webOS 1.2 finally enables users to enter credit card number to purchase some paid app from App Catalog like the iPhone. Under the menu, “Select All” is added. The copy and paste function is also improved. Web browser have big enhancement in webOS 1.2. You can now finally download the files of supported format in web browser. When you are entering forms, it will zoom in automatically.

Here are the lists of updates,

1. Find-as-you-type search support in Email
2. App Catalog updated to support purchasing apps
3. Web browser enhanced
* auto zooms to forms
* download in browser enabled (including opening pdfs)
* better rendering of mobile pages
* Orange+click context menu on links
* save images
4. “Real” copy and paste
* shift tap to select areas of text
* Select All option in Edit menu
5. Sort by Priority or Date Due in Tasks
6. Other minor tweaks and changes

Can’t wait to see the GSM version of Palm Pre. Pre needs to go globally to win.

How Palm Pre plays the cat-and-mouse game with Apple

Apple updated iTunes to 8.2.1 that blocks Palm Pre completely. Earlier today, Palm has released the new webOS system update 1.1 that re-enables syncing with iTunes. How Apple blocks Palm Pre? And how Palm breaks it?

Source said that Apple blocks Palm Pre by telling iTunes not to sync with devices that does not have Apple’s vendor ID. Palm simply breaks it by changing Pre as the follows,

Product ID: 0×8002
Vendor ID: 0×05ac (Apple Inc.)
Version: 0.16
Manufacturer: Palm Inc.

iTunes 8.2.1 thought Pre is now an Apple devices now, so users can sync the media files again. Since changing Vendor ID Numbers and associated Product ID Numbers is not allowed, Palm has already notified USB Implementers Forum about that. They have explained the reason that they want customers to have choices.

This cat-and-mouse game will never end. Let’s see how Apple blocks Pre in the next update.

Apple News | Palm Misuses USB Device IDs Then Files Complaint Against Apple

Palm has filed a complaint against Apple with the USB Implementers Forum claiming that its unfair they can’t misuse the USB Device IDs.

Originally, Palm identified the Pre to iTunes as an iPod made by Palm. This caused Apple to release iTunes 8.2.1 an update which checked the Vender ID to make sure the connected device was manufactured by Apple.

Unbelievably, Palm has now spoofed Apple’s USB Vender ID to re-enable iTunes sync for the Palm Pre. This behavior is specifically against the rules for use of USB.

Unauthorized use of assigned or unassigned USB Vendor ID Numbers and associated Product ID Numbers are strictly prohibited.

If that wasn’t questionable enough, the company also filed a complaint with the USB Implementers Forum saying that Apple’s blocking of the Palm Vender ID constitutes improper use.

“Palm believes that openness and interoperability offer better experiences for users by allowing them the freedom to use the content they own without interference across devices and services, so on behalf of consumers, we have notified the USB Implementers Forum [USB-IF] of what we believe is improper use of the Vendor ID number by another member.”

It seems that Palm believes a lawsuit from Apple will help its publicity.

Apple News | Palm Fires Back, Re-enables iTunes Sync

Palm has announced that the just released Palm webOS 1.1 re-enables iTunes sync.

Oh, and one more thing: Palm webOS 1.1 re-enables Palm media sync. That’s right — you once again can have seamless access to your music, photos and videos from the current version of iTunes (8.2.1).

Apple recently released iTunes 8.2.1 which blocked the syncing of Palm Pre devices with iTunes.

iTunes 8.2.1 provides a number of important bug fixes and addresses an issue with verification of Apple devices.

It will be interesting to see how Apple responds to this development…
