SMS texting and voicemail support come with latest Skype update

Skype (iTunes link) has been updated to 1.1, which brings it some new features making it more closely resemble its desktop sibling. So, what’s new? Well, there’s now support for Skype voicemail (subscription needed) and SMS text messaging.

However, SMS texting is not bidirectional. Which means that you can send SMS texts, but not receive them. And while a dialog box states that sent SMS texts will show up as sent from the sender’s Skype screen name, in my case it displayed the “999-99″ caller ID that typically accompanies calls from a Skype-based client. Perhaps that’s because I don’t have a SkypeIn number?

The 1.1 update also provides additional language support as well as more help when dialing phones.

Apple and Google Propose Standardized Encoding for… Emoji!

Posted by

Love them or hate them, miracle or menace, Emoji are standard message elements in Japan and have caught some favor among internet iPhone users (and TiPb Forum staff…)

The problem, however, is that there’s currently no standard way to encode the little mega-smileys across different carriers and platforms, leading to a lot of “translation” work in between. The solution?

engineers from Google and Apple have got together to try to propose an encoding for these emoji (they have identified 674 of them!) that can be added to the official standard ISO/IEC 10646, as can be seen in this document, Proposal for Encoding Emoji Symbols.

Maybe next Apple could work on not requiring complex, app-bound Emoji activation processes for non-Japanese iPhones? Sumo, tiny red cars, and weirdly smiling brown piles for everyone!

iPhone Guy left Apple and work for the “white spaces”

Posted by

bob-borchers

You may not remember his name, but you probably have watched his videos. His name is Bob Borchers. Borchers is the guy appeared in several iPhone 3G Guided Tour videos. He worked as senior director of iPhone worldwide product marketing, but now he left the company. He is now the general partner of venture-capital firm Opus Capital. He said he was enjoyed while working working in Apple, but want to work for the “range of white spaces in the mobile world”. It probably means he want to try different areas. Currently there are no additional information about the replacement of his position in Apple.

Apple News | Jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS Confirmed

Posted by

GeoHot, chronic, posixninja, and pod2g have been able to verify that the 24kpwn exploit will work to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS.

This is great news for all of you. Basically, this means if someone makes a tethered jailbreak, it easily becomes untethered, because the boot chain is broken. Expect big things soon

The iPhone Dev-Team has also verified this!

About 5 hours ago, we were able to verify that the 24Kpwn exploit that the hybrid team used on the iPod Touch 2G is still present in the bootrom of the iPhone 3GS. That means we can apply the same sort of technique used by our current redsn0w tool to jailbreak and unlock the iPhone 3GS.

This is great news! It seems this bootrom was cut in about the August 2008 timeframe, so the unfortunate early reveal of 24Kpwn earlier this year didn’t affect the iPhone 3GS.

We should see the jailbreak tools updated for the iPhone 3GS very soon!

“Enable” video recording option in iPhone 2G/3G like 3GS and “destroy” the camera

Posted by

Picture 3

These screenshots are not from iPhone 3GS. It is from the old iPhone 3G. Remember the trick which I talked about yesterday. Beside enabling the battery percentage by modifying M69AP.plist, you can also enable the video recording option in camera app. Just add “video-camera” boolean value to be “true” in the file. Take a look of how it will be after the break. Restart or respring the iPhone after you have edited and replaced the file in iPhone.

Unfortunately, even you will see the video recording button in the camera app. It won’t work. You can’t record any video. You won’t be able to take photos with camera app also. It is “destroyed”. Re-edit the M68AP.plist to remove the boolean value you have added.

The reason why you can’t use it is that 3GS supports 30fps which the old iPhone 2G/3G can’t do. It could be possible that iPhone 3GS supports newer and better video encoding codec. If you really need video recording, jailbreak the iPhone first and install Cycorder from Cydia. It’s free and works perfectly.

Apple has approved: Push notification is now available in the latest BeejiveIM and AIM

Posted by

iPhone

iPhone 1

iPhone OS 3.0 does not have background support, Apple delivers it in another way: Push notification. If we don’t talk about the technology, actually you will feel that the app is just like running in the background. Since iPhone 3.0 is there, and BeejiveIM and AIM updates are available today, you can now experience how it works.

BeejiveIM and AIM could be the first 2 instant messaging program that supports push notifications. After you pushed the home button, you’re still online. When friends send you a message, it will be displayed immediately. The first time I tried push notification is AP Mobile when 3.0 is still in beta. It seems push is more useful for IM apps. I have tested it using BeejiveIM for few hours already, but sometimes it disconnected suddenly. But most of the time it works like the SMS app.

Can’t wait to see the other popular IM freeware Palringo to support push in the future.
