Robot with iPhone 3GS head reminds us of a cuter, more magnanimous Steve Jobs

Who’s this little guy? Oh, that’s just Robochan — the Kondo KHR-2HV bot with a fully-functioning iPhone 3GS fused to his head. Not interested? Well, hear us out — because we, too, have seen many an iPhone mod project in our day, leaving us jaded, easily susceptible to waking in the middle of the night to find ourselves shrieking out “fanboy!” for no reason, and finding that in general at this point — merely cranking the word iPhone into your DIY project is the easiest way to send us to Snoresville. But we’ll admit it: Robochan drew us in within ten — nay, five — seconds. His dance moves are killer, and his faces have stolen whatever remnants of a heart we had left. So take our advice: watch the video, which is after the break.

iPhone 3.0.1 is here now to fix SMS vulnerability and you can still jailbreak it after update

Posted by

3.0.1

Apple has issued a statement saying less than 24 hours after the demonstration of SMS vulnerability in the conference, they have issued the patch to fix it. You can now update the iPhone to 3.0.1 that fix the flaw in the iTunes now. It will break the current jailbreak, but you can re-jailbreak and software unlock it after the update.

iPhone Dev Team said users can still use redsn0w 0.8 to jailbreak. The trick is that when choosing the firmware, choose the old 3.0 one. (file that ends with _3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw). They said redsn0w will only touch the part that is not related to 3.0.1 update. You may also install the ultrasn0w to software unlock also. You don’t have to wait for the updated jailbreak tools.

iPhone 3GS special edition for China: No WiFi and Chinese words at the back

Rumor said Apple will partner with Chinese operator China Unicom to bring iPhone 3GS officially to China. No official announcements has been made, but negotiations seems goes well. There are some new photos of iPhone 3GS special edition for China today.

You will see the Simplified Chinese at the back saying this is WCDMA mobile phone by Apple. In the settings menu, there are no Wi-Fi option available. It’s not sure whether it is software or hardware disabled. It is required by the Chinese government. Mobile phone in China cannot have Wi-Fi connectivity.

We are not sure how much it will sell in China, but rumor said the price can be lower than US$44. Since China is a huge market, it’s just like another gold mine for Apple.

ruly amazing images from those reported iPhoneClub.nl on an iPhone 3G that has led to a small fire inside a car, completely ruining the passenger seat.

The unfortunate Pieter C. had left the iPhone in the car for a few hours and on his return he immediately noticed a huge “stain” of black smoke on the glass front. The device was not connected all’accendisigari the car and was left in stand-by. However, a case brought White Belkin, who probably did not allow a sufficient passage of air in such a way as to enable a self-cooling.

Currently Pieter blame attaches to T-Mobile, since the network was the only at that time were using in some way, the iPhone, the remotest causing overheating.

Real Racing iPhone was the best game of Q2 2009

Posted by

So says our latest iPhone Quality Index

Firemint’s Real Racing iPhone tops our PocketGamer.biz Quality Index for the second quarter, with a stonking average rating of 9:33 out of 10 from six reviews.

The Index aggregates review scores from nine of the key iPhone game review sites, and to qualify for our chart, games have to have notched up at least three reviews on the sites covered.

Firemint joint second spot takes too with Flight Control, which is neck and neck with smule Leaf’s Trombone: World Stage with a 9:33 average from three reviews.

Other games to score above nine include PopCap’s Peggle (9.11), Toki Tori’s Chilling (9.10), Digital Chocolate’s California Gold Rush (9.07), ngmoco Defense’s Star (9.00) and id Software’s Wolfenstein 3D (9.00).

The Top 30 games are below, followed by an explanation of the methodology. Meanwhile, click here to see the iPhone Quality Index Publishers chart for Q2 2009.

METHODOLOGY

Sites included in our research for this index were: Pocket Gamer, Pocket Gamer France, IGN Wireless, AirGamer, Mobile Game FAQs, Slide To Play, 148Apps, iPhone Games Network, and Macworld.

For those sites who do not give marks out of 10, they were adjusted (so we doubled the score for sites that mark out of 5, and divided it by 10 for those sites that mark out of 100).

iPhone Dev-Team Offers Tips to Fix Unlock Issues

Ultratips

It looks like version 0.9 of ultrasn0w fixed up the vast majority of any problems people were seeing with the 3G/3GS carrier unlock. But here’s a brief list of fixes for anyone still seeing problems:

  • Unusual battery depletion is almost always caused by people choosing to “Restore from backup” instead of “Setup as new iPhone” when iTunes asks you.  This isn’t caused by either the jailbreak or the unlock, but it’s a common 3.0 snafu. The fix is to just re-run the official 3.0 restore and choose “Setup as new” this time.  Your music and apps and all that will still be synced, but you’ll get rid of any conflicting wifi, bluetooth, or carrier settings.  Then just re-run redsn0w and install ultrasn0w.
  • Remember, ultrasn0w works with hacktivated phones too, but don’t outsmart redsn0w into thinking you don’t need hacktivation! If you don’t plan on using an official sim, don’t activate via iTunes with such a sim.  Just keep your unofficial sim at all times and let redsn0w and ultrasn0w handle hacktivation :)
  • T-Mobile in the USA doesn’t use the 3G frequencies that the iPhones support, so turn off 3G in Settings->General->Network.  (Some T-Mobile territories gracefully hand down to Edge mode, but most do not).
  • Certain unofficial plans have limitations on whether you can make calls and use data at the same time. That’s not unlock-related.
  • Some people have installed previous versions of ultrasn0w using non-standard techniques. While the ultrasn0w 0.9 update should have removed all previous versions of ultrasn0w, these users may have outsmarted our removal.  So make sure you don’t still see /usr/bin/ultrasn0w present if you’re at ultrasn0w 0.9 (which doesn’t have such a binary anymore).
  • If you don’t need or plan to update to ultrasn0w 0.9 from a previous version, you can avoid having that red badge over Cydia by removing repo666 as a Cydia source.  Don’t worry, you can always add it back later :)  If you follow us on twitter you’ll be advised of any new updates anyway.

Last but not least, many thanks to our resident blog moderators, angiepangie and Confucious.  They’re doing a fantastic job helping people in the comments, and so are other volunteers.  Thank you all for your contributions!
