iPhone 3GS jailbreak is here, but there are some limitations. It does not support iPod Touch 3G and out of the box 3GS firmware 3.1, and we found that it doesn’t work with those who have upgraded their 3GS with official firmware also. Greenpois0n will be available which claims it will jailbreak 3GS directly and easily without the need to create custom firmware.

While we are waiting for greenpois0n, the crazy guy GeoHot give out an exciting news. He said he has started to work on jailbreak all the iPhones and iPod Touches. He needs 2 days only. He wrote “And prepare to meet the program that will jailbreak them all.” in the blog with this picture. It means 3GS with firmware 3.1 out of the box can also be jailbroken. That’s all people going to the upgrade. Wish him all the best.

After you have jailbroken the iPhone firmware 3.1, you will discover there is no carrier logo (pictured above on the left). In the settings, it can’t display the carrier you are using. But, the phone functions actually still work. You can still call your friends and get online. Hence, it would be only a cosmetic issue.

If you feel uncomfortable and just want the carrier logo, you can try to install the MakeItMine freeware from Cydia. Type the name of the carrier you are using, and click “Carrier” at the top left. Quit the app and you will have the carrier text.(pictured above on the right) I know it does not really solve the problem, and the text won’t change after you switch the SIM card, but it actually looks better than nothing. Right?

This tutorial will show you how to upgrade your jailbroken iPhone 3GS from OS 3.0.x to OS 3.1 using PwnageTool for Mac.

If you have a 3.0 iPhone you must jailbreak it using this (Mac, Windows) tutorial before continuing.

Step One
Make a folder called “Pwnage” on the desktop. In it, you will need a couple of things. PwnageTool 3.1.3, found here or here

You will also need the 3.1 iPhone firmware.
3.1.0 (3GS): iPhone2,1_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw

When downloading the IPSW file, it is best to download it with Firefox since Safari often auto extracts it!
