MobileMe introduced Find My iPhone services that works with firmware 3.0. One of the great feature of MobileMe is that you can now wipe iPhone 3GS remotely. That means once you have lost the iPhone, you can login MobileMe account and delete all the data. How does it actually works?
Your iPhone must be online with 3G or Wi-Fi in order to use remote wipe. Enable push settings of MobileMe account is required. If the theft have removed SIM card or closed Wi-Fi, your data is still in danger. That means it’s not completely secure, but it’s still nice to have it.
When wiping the data on iPhone 2G/3G or iPod Touch, it takes around 1 hour. But on iPhone 3GS, it only takes a minute. It’s because iPhone 3GS comes with hardware encryption. (One more reason to upgrade?) Since hardware encryption is done on the fly, all the data can be deleted very quickly. On the other hand, old iPhone and iPod Touches does not have it, it takes time to secure delete every last bit.
