MuscleNerd and Planetbeing have made good progress on the iPhone 4 unlock, according to message tweeted by MuscleNerd early this morning.

The screenshot below shows custom application execution similar to what was achieved 2 years ago on the iPhone 3G.

MuscleNerd has announced that an upcoming comex release will jailbreak all 4.0 devices. This has freed up the iPhone Dev-Team to work on an unlock for the iPhone 4.

jailbreak for all devices at 4.0 is already handled by upcoming @comex release so, good time for iphone4 unlock stuff

Comex also authored the 3.1.2 and 3.1.3 userland jailbreak called Spirit. He’s also recently demonstrated Frash, an upcoming release of Flash for the iPhone and iPad.

We’ll let you know the moment the jailbreak is available.

Planetbeing has successfully jailbroken the iPhone 4 using comex’s userland jailbreak code!

Think I’m the first one I know about to get a root shell (and SSH) on iPhone 4, using poor @comex’s code (since he has no iPhone 4).

Below you can see a high resolution screenshot of Cydia that MuscleNerd posted in a congratulations tweet to both hackers.

Unfortunately, p0sixninja says that this jailbreak cannot be released publicly as it contains some of Apple’s software.

the jailbreak shown is a more of a stepping stone for us, it can’t be released because it includes some of apples software

Planetbeing has confirmed this saying: Don’t want to speak for @comex, but afaik no one has breathed a word about release date and what we have right now is nowhere ready.
